A Quarter Century Ago....
At one point in my life, 25 years was a long time. Sometimes it's just as far away as yesterday is...I can remember both but can't reach either one! Well, 25 years ago today a few friends and I drove the 7 or 8 hours from Lexington, Kentucky to Alpine Valley. Within 30 miles of leaving, the muffler fell off the car...Luckily, my friend Geoff (genius that he is!)bummed a coathanger from a service station, and BAM, secure muffler for MONTHS. On to the show! Great Iko opener had everyone bouncing from the get-go. Alot of up tempo songs with an outstanding Let It Grow set closer. Set 2 Uncle John's>Playing>Terrapin was over the top. This recording captures that outdoor quality of the show, the sound swirling around in the breeze just a bit. Great document of a Beautiful day. The Black Muddy River encore was a riveting end to this stellar show. Somehow we found our way back to the car, and more incredibly, to Milwaukee and the Marriott where the Dead were also staying. I always felt that the Dead laughed as they spun you around and around and dared you to even find your vehicle...especially at those outdoor shows where you go in in daylight, then exit into another world in the dark. Wish we had been able to be there for all 3 shows, but the 27th of June 1987 was just fine...
